SUMMARY

Responsible for design, documentation and delivery of one of the largest commercial chiller installations in Australia at the time. The project was delivered and operational 6 months from contract award date to meet summer peak loads. The installation was carried out over Kings Way in Melbourne, one of the busiest thoroughfare’s in Victoria. The project included the upgrade of Crown Casino’s central chilled water plant to meet the existing and future needs of the complex. 

WORKS INCLUDED

Four Water Cooled centrifugal chillers, 2 x 4500kw Variable Speed Drive (VSD) chillers and 2 x 5300 kw constant speed chillers (Total 19.6 Mw) c/w associated cooling towers and pumps. These chillers were pre-ordered to meet the delivery program

New controls system (BACnet – Comfortpoint). This installation was the catalyst for a complex wide protocol upgrade

New ring main units and three new HV transformers. The transformers were pre-ordered to meet the delivery program

New plantroom complete with structural support system for chillers, cooling towers and pumps

New Architectural screens and louvres to minimise the visual impact that the installation will have on the complex and surrounding areas

Future proofing the site by allowing for additional capacity in Cooling Towers for future tri-gen

Major Structural work to support the plant and equipment

CHALLENGES

Lifting of plant and equipment over Kings Way, Melbourne

Short program contract – Plant was operational within 6 months of awarding the contract. Including double shifts of construction and management team

Cut-overs and works taking place in 24 / 7 operational facility

Structural challenges with the existing overpass

Handling of Plant and equipment with significant weight

High profile project
